Some people prefer to get their tattoos as little flash pieces, building a larger piece bit by bit. This patchwork style has become very popular, allowing people to get numerous tattoos of the objects or people they enjoy. Even though this style of tattooing has taken off, there are still those who want to sit for more than five hours at a time, getting entire half sleeves or chest pieces done in a single sitting. These clients are well prepared and ready when they arrive at the shop, excited to get their new huge piece. But how does one prepare for these long sessions? There’s a few things that you can do to brace yourself before you show up to a long sitting!
Make sure that you get some good rest the night before your new tattoo. Sitting for a long time is taxing and will definitely deplete your energy. Instead of going out and celebrating the night before your appointment, it’s a good idea to stay home and relax. Eat a healthy dinner, hang out, and watch some TV. If you go out and have a few drinks, you might not get the amount of rest you need. Alcohol can also thin your blood out and make it difficult to heal your new tattoo. It’s definitely a good idea to take the night off before hand and prepare yourself mentally for your appointment!
It’s important not to panic. Chances are if you’re getting a larger piece like this, you’ve gotten tattooed before. But some people do come in and want a half sleeve for their first tattoo. Of course, there are nerves that come with getting a big piece but always remember; BREATHE. Keep the end result in mind. When you’re done sitting, you will have a beautiful new tattoo to show off and love. The process of getting a tattoo is one of the most important parts of this industry. It really brings meaning to the phrase “no beauty without pain”.
Staying hydrated and full of food is extremely important when preparing to sit for a long tattoo session. Be sure to bring a bottle of water with you and a few small snacks, maybe a bag of Trail Mix or a small sandwich that you can eat during a break. Fruit is also a good option or maybe even some veggies. Keeping your blood sugar up will help your body handle the shock of getting such a large piece. This added energy will prolong your ability to sit and you won’t end up being a hangry monster by the end of your tattoo!
Bringing a device like an iPod or if your artist has a TV in their room, it’s always a good idea to ask if you can bring something so that you can pay attention to that instead of the tattoo. You can also talk to the artist, although some artists are very quiet while they work. Many of them prefer to focus on the work they’re doing so if you’d like to listen to your iPod, just make sure you communicate that beforehand with the artist. Sometimes, they’ll even ask you what kind of music you listen to and they’ll put that on in the room for you!
It’s also a good idea to mentally prepare for your tattoo a few days in advance. By telling yourself that you’re going to be getting a beautiful new piece and that you are capable of accomplishing great things, you will be more apt to sit for the entire thing. Even though every individual has different pain tolerances, the human body is extremely resilient and can absolutely handle these long sittings as long as you’re in the right mindset! For a lot of people, getting tattooed is a type of therapy. They use it to release negativity that they’ve been feeling in a healthy, beautiful way. Having trouble preparing for a long sitting?
