Traditional styles of tattoos have been around since the 1700s. Sailors that encountered indigenous communities with tattoos and were inspired to start their own collection of body art. When the 19th century rolled around, the traditional style of tattoo became more refined, with thick outlines and bright colors.
Realistic tattoos are a recent addition to the industry, even though the realistic art style has been around since around the Renaissance. These life-like tattoos can almost perfectly resemble their real life counterparts, whether that be a person, cat, dog, or something else all together. Realism can be done in color or in black and grey, depending on the client’s preference.
Tribal may not be as popular today as it once was but it is the oldest tattoo style in the world. It dates back thousands of years. The words “tribal tattoo” usually covers a wide range of art but there are many different variations from the general idea. Most tribal tattoos are done with black ink and form elaborate patterns.
Pop culture is a huge part of society these days and new school tattoos reflect that! These tattoos are exaggerated and wacky. Seeing as how they started appearing in the late 80s, early 90s, it makes sense as to why these pieces look the way they do. The new school style is very cartoonish and definitely one to add to the collection!
When the traditional style started to evolve, it gained more pronounced line work and more vivid color pallets but it also took on a more illustrative quality. Traditional tattoos utilize heavy lines and a limited pallet but the neo-traditional work uses various line weights to get more textures and details in the tattoo. This particular style is great for tattoos of animals and live images.
Japanese tattoos are amazing works of art. The traditional style of Japanese tattoos, also known as Irezumi, base their ideas off of Japanese folklore. Mainly consisting of dragons, phoenixes, and other parts of Japan’s incredible past. Japanese style tattoos always seem to tell a story of epic proportions. The dramatic backgrounds full of smoke and waves add to this amazing style of tattooing.
