If you’ve ever gotten a piercing before (and I’m sure most of you have or you wouldn’t be here reading this), you’re probably aware that when you first get a piercing, your initial jewelry is longer or bigger than you originally thought it was going to be. This is to accommodate any swelling that occurs. If the jewelry is too short initially, excess swelling can cause irritation and other problems. The piece can become embedded in the skin, which is just no fun for the client!
When it comes to downsizing, it’s an important step in the piercing process! We usually recommend that clients return to the shop after about three to four weeks after the piercing has been installed for a downsized piece. This applies to almost every piercing, especially oral piercings and cartilage piercings. The soft, squishy tissue of the oral area definitely swells a good amount after the piercing is done. With cartilage, it’s the
same thing. The area tends to swell and then go back down to normal after the first few weeks.
But once the swelling goes down, it’s very important to visit your piercer for a downsize. When we downsize jewelry, we put in a smaller piece that suits your anatomy. This will make the jewelry sit more flush with the skin, lowering the risk of snags. Also, a very important part of downsizing is sleeping on the jewelry. If you sleep on your piercing with the longer jewelry, sometimes it can actually shift the piercing channel and make your jewelry sit funny. It’s extremely important that you come back to see us so that we can sell you the shorter post so that your healing process continues to go well. We do request that you come in for your downsize instead of trying to do it yourself. We have tools to make the process very easy and gentle so that your piercing remains happy!
Having piercings is super cute and trendy but it is a lifestyle to have them. You have to take care of them and pay attention to them. Even with quality jewelry, things can still go wrong if you don’t care for your piercing. Downsizing your jewelry is an important step in this process and it tends to be forgotten by a lot of clients. Since we do care about our clients and their piercings, you can usually expect a call from us shortly after you get your piercing done. We like to check in with you to make sure the healing is going well and that you don’t have any questions.
If you do have questions about your healing piercing, please do not hesitate to call or stop in. Our piercers are available seven days a week from 12pm-8pm. They are here to help with all of your piercing needs so please, come on in and see us so we can make sure you’re on the right healing track!
